19th-century illustration of Via Appia or Appian way was one of the earliest and strategically most important Roman roads of the ancient republic. It connected Rome to Brindisi, Apulia, in southeast Italy. Original artwork published in "A pictorial history of the world's great nations: from the earliest dates to the present time" by Charlotte M. Yonge (Selmar Hess, New York, 1882).
